Don’t get me wrong; I’m excited to see what Rian Johnson will do with the series. I’ve liked his previous films and I think he’s one of the most original, exciting visionary directors making movies these days.
Which is precisely why I’m also a bit dissapointed that he’s another director working on a franchise film.
There has been some discussion that Hollywood is lacking original ideas and that we’re only seeing sequels and adaptations of established properties. So part of me finds it a bit worrying that we have someone who’s known for his original ideas working on “just another Star Wars film” for the next couple of years.
Again, don’t get me wrong; I’m a huge fan of Star Wars and all these superhero movies. I just don’t want those to become the only type of movies we’ll see in theaters.
This news (combined with the anouncements of the directors they hired for the spin offs) is the first time where I feel some concern for this supposed Hollywood implosion that Steven Spielberg was talking about a while ago.
When all the interesting talent in Hollywood is making either a Star Wars or comic book movie, then who’s left bringing in original ideas?
Having said that; I’m excited for Star Wars VIII, but lets just say I’m even more excited for the opportunities Rian Johnson will get after he’s done working on these films.
Lets hope one of those opportunities will be the chance to direct a big budget film based on his original ideas.
